PRESS RELEASE: IMMEDIATE CONDEMNATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAMEROON REFORMATION PARTY DEMANDS INDEPENDENT INQUIRY INTO THE CUSTODIAL DEATH OF ANICET EKANI

YAOUNDÉ, CAMEROON – December 1, 2025 – The Cameroon Reformation Party (CRP) and its leader, Foligar Lang, today expressed profound outrage and issued a categorical condemnation following the reported death of prominent opposition figure Anicet Ekani while in state custody.

The CRP holds the government fully responsible for the death of Mr. Ekani, who was the leader of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM) and a vocal critic of the current regime.

“The passing of Anicet Ekani in the state’s care is not merely a tragedy; it is a profound indictment of the human rights situation and the state of political detention in Cameroon,” stated CRP Leader Foligar Lang. “Despite repeated warnings about his deteriorating health and the ‘stressful and unsuitable’ conditions of his detention, the state failed in its fundamental duty to protect his life.”

💔 A Call for Accountability

The death of a political detainee, particularly one whose fragile health was publicly documented, raises grave questions about the treatment of political prisoners and the denial of adequate medical care in Cameroon’s penitentiary system.

Mr. Lang and the Cameroon Reformation Party demand the following immediate actions:

  1. Establishment of an Independent International Commission: A full, transparent, and independent investigation, including international medical and human rights experts, must be launched immediately to determine the precise circumstances and cause of Mr. Ekani’s death.
  2. Immediate Release of All Political Detainees: The CRP reiterates its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners who are currently detained on questionable charges and whose health is at risk.
  3. Reform of Detention Conditions: An urgent review and reform of all detention facilities to ensure they meet minimum international standards for health, sanitation, and humane treatment.

“This must not be allowed to become yet another dark stain on our national conscience,” Lang added. “The regime must be held accountable for the loss of a courageous voice for change. Anicet Ekani’s legacy will continue to inspire the fight for a truly democratic and just Cameroon.”

The Cameroon Reformation Party extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and political allies of Anicet Ekani.
